Projects by nüans (Anna Heidenhain, Elmar Hermann, Maki Umehara)
2006-2016, based in: Rheinland (Germany), Istanbul, Berlin, Tokyo
In October 2006, nüans was co-founded by Anna Heidenhain, Elmar Hermann and Maki Umehara from a slight hope to explore artworks in different contexts togeher with a few artists. nüans pursues a conceptual approach that is the cornerstone of the projects. Alongside with German artists' opinion, we decided that nüans would not try to represent the same way as individual works by each of nüans members. The framewok of projects by nüans as follows:
"Concept and text will be highlighted. Other artists will be invited. nüans presents artworks by other artists to exlplore artistic pursuits together in an exhibition or in a project. There will be a way to be nüans project without exhibiting any of artworks by Anna Heidenhain, Elmar Hermann, and Maki Umehara. The projects will be formed by using concept much rather than material." Thus, while working together with artists, nüans had been exploring curatorial projects as well as collaborative works approx. for the first half-year.

The following is what Umehara described regarding a plan of art project.:
"In order to improve her artistic ability and experience further, Maki Umehara intends to explore her works in public space, private space, and different contexts including extraordinary places."
More specifically, support for Umehara's stay in Germany and her studio were required to work and exhibit within the precincts of the Kunstakademie, and her studio etc.; and moreover in order to realize experimental projects after her graduation from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. However, she described nothing about collaboration with German artists after the graduation. In the process of the realization, she began to work with two further German artists, and that was the starting point of nüans project. Since Umehara had been sharing a lot of time for discussion together with other artists to collaborate before nüans, she often asked herself - why is it a matter of trying collaborative art? At German artists' request from the beginning, curatorial collaborative works and conceptual art were mainly realized in the frame of nüans, not to be for individual works by nüans. In fact, without support by art institutions in the following page, nüans could not realize the projects such as the exhibition The Fit (curated by M. H. Shamberg, nüans), and so on.
nüans had never calculated for honorarium (project fee) of Heidenhain, Hermann, and Umehara in the expencses of the projects to be supported by art insitutions from 2006 to 2016. No scholarships on the occation of the project by nüans had been given to the individuals, Heidenhain, Hermann, and Umehara. Scholarships included alongside with publications; travel costs (flights); honorarium for other artists on the projekt Hayy, etc. Besides, without being nüans as art gallery, its project had been occasionally participated in the exhibition at art galleries.Exhibition’s view: Project by Michael H.
